Circulated Materials Policy

  1. Books – books are checked out only to AAO members residing in the United States and Canada. 
  2. Theses – theses cannot be checked out from the collection. 
  3. Journals – journal issues cannot be checked out from the collection. 
     

Scanning/Emailing Journal Articles Policy

 
A.          AAO Members/AAO International Members:
 
  1. The AAO Librarian will scan/email 1 journal article out of a journal issue for a member. The AAO Library will not scan/email 2 journal articles out of the same issue for the member on the same request.
  2. The AAO Librarian will scan/email 1 chapter of a book. If more than 1 chapter is requested by the member then the librarian will ask the member if they would like to check out the book.
  3. The AAO Librarian will only scan/email 10 journal articles a week for a member.
  4. All journal articles emailed will have a page inserted before the first page of the article. This page will state the copyright statement.
  5. The AAO Librarian will use interlibrary loan to request articles for members when those articles are not found in the library’s own collection. However, statement 1 will be applied to all requests.
  6. All scanned/emailed articles become the property of the user.
  7. Online Journals
            A.          AJODO
AAO Members and AAO International Members have free access to AJODO articles via the AJODO website and the AAO website. When articles are requested from the AJODO, the library staff will email directions explaining how to access the AJODO website for their future use.
            B.          Open Access Journals
When a journal article request is from an open access journal (the article is free and one does not need a username and password to access the article), then the library staff will email directions explaining how to obtain the requested article from the open access journal’s website.
 
 
B.          AAO Student Members/AAO International Student Members
  1. The AAO Librarian will scan/email 1 journal article out of a journal issue for a student member. The AAO Library will not scan/email 2 journal articles out of the same issue for the student member on the same request.
  2. The AAO Librarian will scan/email 1 chapter of a book. If more than 1 chapter is requested by the student member then the librarian will ask the student member if they would like to check out the book.

            A.          AJODO
AAO Student Members and AAO International Student Members have free access to AJODO articles via the AJODO website and the AAO website. When articles are requested from the AJODO, the library staff will email directions explaining how to access the AJODO website for their future use. 
            B.           Open Access Journals
When a journal article request is from an open access journal (the article is free and one does not need a username and password to access the article), then the library staff will email directions explaining how to obtain the requested article from the open access journal’s website.
 
C.          AAO Retired Members – All statements under the AAO Member/AAO International Member section will apply except for AJODO requests. The AAO Library will email AJODO articles to retired members since they do not have free access to the AJODO website.
 
D.          WFO Members/Non-AAO Members – the AAO Librarian will not scan/email journal articles for WFO members or non-members, nor will the Librarian obtain journal articles via interlibrary loan for WFO members or non-members.
 
Note: The same policy will be used if a member wants article(s) copied and mailed/faxed.
